Book Review Autumn 2001
By Linda Peel. FREEDOM IN EXILE. The autobiography of the DALAI LAMA OF TIBET. ISBN 0-7474-1006-2
I have always had a fascination for Tibet I do not know where this comes from. When I hear the Horns the Tibetan Monks use I go goose bumps all over. As I read the book it not only brings home the gentle spirit of the man, but also the deep spiritual consciousness, the depth of willpower to be who he is as the Dalai Lama but also a man who has emotions like all the rest of us. I learned a great deal about myself and the way I look at life .His Holiness brings to life in the pages of the book all the sorrow, frustration, fear but most of all a belief that we all in some small way have good in us, and to try and find that in each other, that way we will progress spiritually.
Through reading this book I have gained a great deal of respect for a man that I have never met, but feel brings with him a great peace of spirit, humility and gentle sense of humor. Childhood could not have been easy for him, to be constrained as he was learning to be a Monk but not just any Monk makes his humility all the greater.
This book is well worth reading for the autobiographical aspect but also to learn about Tibet the place. |
